Adventure Cyclist

Adventure Cyclist magazine is published nine times a year by the national nonprofit Adventure Cycling Association. As Art Director of the magazine, I make all decisions pertaining to the look and feel of the magazine, and have done so since 2017. I combine my passions for layout design, typography, illustration, photo retouching, and collaborating with artists to make bicycle travel stories come to life.

The bread and butter of my job is designing every spread of the magazine. I approach every story a little bit differently, but with similar strategy: create an engaging opener, utilize custom lettering as needed, choose dynamic photos/illustrations, and capture attention with drop caps/pull quotes.

One of the most exciting parts of my job is scouting, commissioning, and directing a wide variety of freelance artists. In the past, this has included studio photographers, event photographers, illustrators, printmakers, and designers. I love creating relationships with these artists and collaborating with them to create top-notch visuals for Adventure Cyclist.

In addition to working with contracted freelancers, I also contribute my own illustrations to the magazine whenever necessary. Oftentimes this shows up as illustrated gear lists, feature openers, and small instructional doodles that add life and character to the magazine.
